ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carlo Cattaneo (1930–2009)

Carlo Cattaneo was active in the Italian Postwar and Contemporary art movements. He was born in Alassio, Italy, and later worked in Rome. A passionate reader of classical literature, Cattaneo drew heavily from authors like Cervantes, Dante, and Ovid. He also engaged with philosophical and poetic works, including those by Kierkegaard and Leopardi, translating these texts and their themes into his art.

Cattaneo is particularly known for his expressive etchings and drawings, frequently featuring human figures, sometimes in narrative or dream-like scenes. The human form and the broader “human condition” are a recurring theme, often conveying an emotional or narrative quality. Cattaneo’s works are not simple illustrations but are autonomous creations that run parallel to the literary works that inspired them. He used visual glosses and other symbols to return the “suggestion” of a text to his audience. Across his works, he created a captivating, and at times hypnotic, ambiance. This quality is particularly noticeable in his more narrative pieces. Cattaneo also paid tribute to other artists, such as the renowned Italian painter Giorgio Morandi.

Carlo Cattaneo has been heavily exhibited throughout his homeland of Italy, and a small collection of his engravings and drawings is held by the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome. His work is primarily sold in Italy where it is highly collectable and popular at auction.
