Stealing The Mona Lisa by Giles Ward

After Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa he placed her in a suitcase and kept her in his apartment. He didn’t look. It was enough to know she was there.

In bed I read. The pink flush at the base of my lover’s neck has gone.

Crowds queued to see the blank space on the gallery wall. She was the most famous woman in the world and, for over two years, she was his.

I lean over and switch out the light. It is dark. I can no longer see her. But it is enough to know she is there.
